Championing Transformative Climate Solutions as Earthshot Prize Nominators

14 Mar 2025

Each year, The Earthshot Prize (TEP) spotlights climate changemakers and innovators to accelerate groundbreaking solutions that will restore and protect our planet. Five winners are awarded £1 million each to scale their solutions, while 15 finalists receive tailored support from TEP’s global alliance of partners.

As a Global Alliance Founding Partner of TEP, Temasek Trust spotlights Asia in the fight against climate change. This year, Temasek Trust and its ecosystem entities ABC Impact, Co-Axis, Philanthropy Asia Alliance, and Temasek Foundation are Official Nominators of the Prize to identify impactful, high-potential solutions in the five Earthshot categories:

  • Protect and Restore Nature
  • Clean our Air
  • Revive our Oceans
  • Build a Waste-Free World
  • Fix our Climate

Read on to learn how platforms such as TEP accelerate climate action, and what nominators seek in potential innovations.

Could you tell us about your organisation’s work in climate, the environment, and sustainability?

ABC Impact — Mr. Yeo Zuo Yi, Director: ABC Impact is a Singapore-based impact private equity firm committed to investing in businesses that drive measurable environmental and social change while generating strong financial returns. We seek businesses that develop innovative technologies and business models to address environmental challenges — ranging from carbon reduction and renewable energy deployment, to circular economy solutions and sustainable agriculture. Beyond capital, we actively partner with our portfolio companies, providing strategic guidance, operational expertise, and access to networks to accelerate their growth and maximise impact.

By investing in scalable, market-driven solutions, ABC Impact is shaping a more sustainable and resilient future for Asia.

Co-Axis — Ms. Joycelyn Ong, Head:
Co-Axis is the first global impact marketplace designed to unlock risk capital and leverage community-driven efforts to accelerate innovative solutions to pressing global sustainability challenges. To date, Co-Axis has almost 100 impact opportunities that work across themes, including but not limited to, ocean conservation, environmental restoration, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture.

The platform connects funders — such as family offices, corporates, philanthropists, and private foundations — with early-stage ventures, charitable organisations, and blended finance projects with significant impact potential in the climate and sustainability space, and beyond.

Co-Axis has curated ~100 impact opportunities across categories such as ocean conservation, mangrove restoration, and more.

Philanthropy Asia Alliance (PAA) — Mr. Reginald Lee, Catalyst, Partnership:
PAA’s climate work focuses on curating high-impact projects, convening stakeholders, and capacity building to drive sustainable solutions in Asia. PAA also connects funders, policymakers, and innovators to align efforts for systemic impact. One way we do this is through our annual Philanthropy Asia Summit and the Communities initiative, launched in 2024, which enables members to pool resources and expertise.

To strengthen regional capacity, PAA partners with the World Economic Forum on the Giving to Amplify Earth Action initiative, fostering cross-sector climate collaborations. We also work with the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices to run the Amplifier mentorship programme, which aims to nurture impact startups to become commercially viable and scale positive impact in Asia.

Temasek Foundation (TF) — Mr. Anders Soh, Director, Programmes:
Temasek Foundation crowdsources groundbreaking innovations globally to identify the best solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation. We deploy catalytic risk capital in the form of grants for early-stage, deep-tech and nature-based solutions that generate positive returns for People, Planet, and Prosperity. This helps innovators demonstrate their proof-of-value and accelerate their journey towards commercialisation.

Temasek Trust (TT) — Ms. Jennifer Lewis, Lead, Strategic Partnerships; Co-Head, Collaboration & Partnership:
At Temasek Trust, we approach climate and sustainability through a systems lens. By embarking on strategic partnerships and deploying catalytic philanthropic capital — from grantmaking to impact investing — we aim to accelerate and amplify transformative solutions for enduring impact.

We recently launched Catalytic Capital for Climate & Health (C3H), an impact-first vehicle that provides catalytic capital to innovative, early-stage companies in Climate, Health, and their intersection.

Why did you decide to become a TEP nominator?

ABC Impact — Mr. Yeo Zuo Yi: TEP identifies and accelerates the world’s most promising environmental solutions. As an investor dedicated to impact and sustainability, we recognise the value of TEP’s platform in bringing together global expertise, funding, and visibility to drive meaningful change. Serving as a nominator allows us to help connect entrepreneurs with the right resources, networks, and capital to scale their innovations and create lasting, real-world impact.

      Co-Axis — Ms. Joycelyn Ong:
Being a TEP nominator enables us to spotlight innovative solutions on our platform that tackle critical environmental challenges and seek support to scale. By nominating these opportunities and connecting them with other similar platforms, we aim to accelerate the development and implementation of their solutions.

Beyond attracting funding for projects onboard Co-Axis, our role as a nominator also builds our growing ecosystem of impact players, expanding our network of funders, founders, and experts. These connections enhance Co-Axis’ offerings, including impact measurement capabilities, knowledge hub building, and events, while also enabling us to facilitate partnerships to support our impact opportunities.

      PAA — Mr. Reginald Lee:
As a TEP nominator, PAA has the opportunity to spotlight groundbreaking climate solutions – many emerging from Asia – on the global stage. This includes innovators from the Amplifier programme, such as biotechnology startup MYCL, a 2024 Amplifier mentee and 2024 TEP finalist.

MYCL, an Amplifier mentee and TEP finalist, cultivates mycelium to produce a sustainable leather alternative.

      TF — Mr. Anders Soh:
Climate change is pervasive and complex, requiring the collaboration of stakeholders across the Public, Private, and Philanthropic sectors. Platforms such as TEP bring together key ecosystem players — from capital providers, to regulators and commercial adopters — to help accelerate the scaling and adoption of disruptive innovations globally.

      TT — Ms. Jennifer Lewis:
TEP accelerates climate solutions by bridging innovation and market readiness. It champions climate optimism by spotlighting young climate changemakers at every stage — from early ideas to breakthrough solutions. Through impactful storytelling and flagship events, TEP energises the next generation of climate leaders.

What stands out to you when evaluating innovative solutions?

ABC Impact — Mr. Yeo Zuo Yi: We evaluate nominees based on three key factors: scalability, impact, and execution capability.

        • Scalability: Solutions must have the potential for large-scale deployment and systemic change, rather than being limited to localised impact.
        • Impact: The innovation should address a critical environmental challenge with measurable benefits, such as carbon reduction, waste elimination, or biodiversity enhancement.
        • Execution Capability: A strong founding team with a clear vision, sound strategy, and resilience to navigate commercialisation and scale effectively.

We are particularly drawn to solutions that are scientifically rigorous and innovative, yet commercially viable with a clear pathway to financial sustainability and widespread adoption.

        Co-Axis — Ms. Joycelyn Ong:
We are seeking innovative solutions working at the intersections of climate and social outcomes. Environmental challenges cannot be solved in silo, and must carry the intention of uplifting the communities most affected by climate and sustainability issues.

For example, we nominated Yayasan Menoken Indonesia Sejahtera Bumi Semesta, a non-profit in Indonesia that partners indigenous tribes, tapping on their critical role in nurturing the country’s rainforests and biodiversity. This solution stood out for intentionally approaching sustainability through an equity lens. By building capacity in the local communities, the organisation is simultaneously advancing indigenous people’s sovereignty and tackling climate change.

        PAA — Mr. Reginald Lee:
We prioritise initiatives that demonstrate systemic, innovative, and scalable solutions, and where cross-sector collaboration amplifies impact. Our key considerations include:

        • Systemic Impact: The potential to address root causes and drive long-term change
        • Innovation: The uniqueness of the approach, technology, or model in addressing environmental challenges
        • Scalability and Replicability: The feasibility of expanding the solution across regions and contexts
        • Collaborative Potential: The ability to foster partnerships across sectors and leverage diverse resources for greater impact

        TF — Mr. Anders Soh:
Temasek Foundation supports innovations looking to conduct their commercial pilots in Asia. We evaluate all innovations based on the criteria of Desirability, Feasibility, and Viability. We are seeking solutions that address significant climate challenges, and have a unique value proposition — such as being lower cost, more efficient, or less carbon intensive — as compared to market alternatives. Solutions should also have sustainable business models, any necessary regulatory approvals, and receptacles to adopt their solutions.

We believe that innovations which address these criteria are on the right track to achieving sustained growth at scale in building a liveable planet.

        TT — Ms. Jennifer Lewis:
We seek bold solutions from visionary founders — deep-tech or nature-based — to drive transformative breakthroughs. Take for example the Decarbonising Rice project by the Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL). While rice is a staple crop for millions, it contributes 10% of global methane emissions. TLL has developed a holistic, science-driven solution that reduces methane emissions, improves water efficiency, and boosts rice yields. This breakthrough not only mitigates climate impact but also enhances food security and strengthens farmers’ livelihoods — proving that we can feed millions while protecting the planet.

How can innovators and project partners reach out to or explore collaboration opportunities with your organisation?

ABC Impact — Mr. Yeo Zuo Yi: Companies developing transformative sustainability solutions can reach us via our website’s contact page or through our professional network. We encourage founders to share a concise introduction outlining their solution’s impact, scalability, and stage of development. We also welcome engagement with like-minded organisations, investors, and researchers who share our commitment to building a more sustainable future.

          Co-Axis — Ms. Joycelyn Ong:
The impact opportunities on Co-Axis are mostly sourced through trusted partners like TEP, ABC Impact, and Temasek Foundation. We also allow an open call for submissions to be onboarded directly through the platform. By bringing together various industry leaders and sharing their insights, we help our impact opportunities build their capabilities and connections, and open doors to funding. Beyond our digital platform, we are cultivating a thriving offline community where these startups can connect directly with impact-driven funders and amplify their own impact stories, sparking collaborations.

          PAA — Mr. Reginald Lee:
PAA members and TT ecosystem partners actively identify and recommend new innovators for consideration. We also welcome direct connections from innovators and potential project partners through our website.

          TF — Mr. Anders Soh:
Temasek Foundation drives a network of global challenges, including:
